Rex A. Hawkins Obituary

Rex A. Hawkins, 67 of Killbuck, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on
Thursday, September 19, 2024 at Akron General Hospital after suffering a massive stroke.
To say he is dearly loved and deeply missed is an understatement. He leaves behind a great
legacy of generosity, kind-heartedness, gentleness, compassion and laughter. He will be
remembered for being a man who would give you the shirt off his back and stop whatever he
was doing to help someone. As a teenager he accepted Christ and his faith remained strong all
of his life. His love of Christ and family was evident through the ways he cared for others and
protected his loved ones. He loved talking with anyone, and left this world a better place.
Rex graduated from West Holmes High School and JVS in 1975, where he studied welding. He
started his own business, Hawkins Welding and Repair in 1978, and later added an insulation
component. Prior to that he worked in the lumber business and for the Briar Hill Stone Company
as a sawyer. Rex was a skilled welder and custom designer including railings. He took pride in
his role as a Richland Township trustee for 20 years, helping the public and writing grants for
community projects. He was also accomplished in heavy machinery operation, tractor and
mechanical repair, grave digging and custom hauling and spreading. And to him there was no
better machine than a John Deere
Rex was the best son, brother, uncle and friend anyone could ever have. His favorite thing to do
was spend time with his family and his family loved every minute with him.
Rex was born in Millersburg, Ohio on July 17, 1957, to Lester and Jean Hawkins. His parents
preceded him in death, Lester- January 2023 and Jean- September 2023. The void left by 3
such special and incredible people in such a short time has been indescribably hard for those
who love them, but the sweet reunion with each other and Jesus in Heaven is the hope that
helps the sorrow. He is survived by his loving family: sister, Dixie (Bill) Greenfield, niece, his
“sweetheart”, Rebecca Mills and his favorite “little buddy” and great nephew, Elijah Manuel Mills.
Our time with Rex was way too short. We long for the day of our own reunion with him, Lester,
and Jean, as we all enter into the presence of Jesus. Consistent with Rex’s giving personality he
was a donor for Lifebanc, which will help over a hundred people with his body’s donation. The
family wants to thank everyone who has prayed for him and our grieving hearts. We would also
like to thank the compassionate team on the Neuro ICU floor and chaplaincy at Akron General
Hospital as well as Lifebanc. Rex was a member of the Millersburg Baptist Church. There will
be a combined Celebration of Life service to honor these special lives on Saturday, October
26th, 11:00 am at Killbuck Valley Christian Church (10504 Co Rd. 620 Killbuck OH.). In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to the Millersburg Baptist Church.
