Gary L. Allison age 87, of Glenmont, Ohio passed away November 14, 2024, following an extended illness.
Gary was born June 8, 1937, and was the son of Robert and Sally (Michael) Allison. Gary was an outstanding athlete for Glenmont High School. In 6th grade he was asked to play on the 7th and 8th grade basketball team, and they won the league championship that year. Gary played for Glenmont High School all four years (1952-1955). He was the point guard for basketball; pitcher and third base in baseball; linebacker, running back and quarterback in football. He lettered all four years in each sport. Gary’s junior year he was named Honorable Mention, 2nd team on the Holmes County Basketball All Star Team. Gary was a 1st team All County selection for basketball his senior year and led his baseball team to a championship trophy that same year.
Gary was presented the MVP Award by WWST and Roy Bates. He was chosen to receive the Maibach MVP Award for the 1954-55 season. After graduating Gary had the opportunity to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals. Then he entered the US Army in 1956 where he made both the basketball and baseball teams while stateside. While stationed in Germany he continued to play baseball with the Army Team. During his time in Germany, he was stationed with Elvis Presley. After returning home, he played Independent League Baseball for Tri-County, basketball and fast pitch softball for local teams and coached Little League baseball in Holmes County. He retired from AEP after 32 years and enjoyed working on the family farms. He enjoyed hunting, golf and traveling during his retirement. Gary was inducted into the Holmes County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
Gary was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Spartan Lodge #126, a member of the Valley of Canton Scottish Rite, he was a member of the Millersburg Chapter #86 and a member of the Theban Council #126. He was a member of the Killbuck Church of Christ.
Gary is survived by four daughters, Brenda Rady of Millersburg, Cindy Geog of Killbuck, Deb (Scott) Vance of Glenmont, Judy Scherer of Glenmont; eight grandchildren, Brian (Anna) Harford, Trent (Janci) Buckland, Mandy Geog, Joe (Sarah) Galford, Allison Conner, Chris Vance, Carman (Mike) Myers, Kayla (Chuck) Woolsey; and 15 great grandchildren Cody, Mark, Chloe, Anthony, Kinsley, Branson, Madalynn, Cyla, Nora, Theordore, Vivian, Zander, Katie, Landon, Falyn. He is also survived by his extended family Cathy Cline, her sons Heath, Chad and Jared and their families and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Robert Gary Allison, great granddaughter Savannah Mae Galford, his parents, and brothers Richard “Dick” and Arthur Allison.
Graveside services were held Saturday November 16th at Sunnyside Cemetery, Glenmont, Ohio with pastor Rik Snyder officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Killbuck VFW and Millersburg American Legion.
