Dr. Zane Craig Obituary

Dr. Zane G. Craig, age 68, of Millersburg, OH, passed away on December 25th while in hospice care in Wooster, OH.  Cremation with a private family burial will occur at a later date.

Zane was born February 11th, 1952 in Wilmington, OH to Hollis and Marjorie Craig.  He attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio before going on to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University in 1978.  He married Cheryl Ross on September 26th, 1981, in Salt Lake City, UT.  Dr. Craig was a veteran, serving in the US Army Medical Corps from 1978 until 1990, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Major.  He completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in Michigan and practiced throughout the Midwest for 30 years.  When asked how many babies he’d delivered, he often replied that he’d stopped counting at 3000.  Dr. Craig cultivated an interest in fly fishing and camping/hiking while in the military, having been stationed everywhere from Alabama to Alaska.  He enjoyed sharing these and other outdoor activities with his son, often in the company of his dogs.  An avid reader and book collector, he was also published in academic literature.

Zane is survived by his wife Cheryl, son John, and cousins Harold (Amy) Ballard and Linda (Kurt) Fancett with whom he was raised; mother in-law Elsie Ross, brothers-in-law Stephen (Jorene) Ross, David (Kristi Haughenbury) Ross, and Kenneth Estling; sisters-in-law Joan (Dr. Nick) McKinney, and Melanie Follet. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Gerald Ross, and sister-in-law Kathleen Estling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Holmes County Humane Society, P.O. Box 442, Millersburg, Ohio 44654 or the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America.

The family wishes to extend its sincere thanks to the staff of Cleveland Clinic and Smithville-Western Commons.
