“When we were dating, I was amazed at her ability and willingness to speak with ease and comfort to those she had never met. She loved to talk and knew no strangers. Being less outgoing and socially adept, I asked her “How can you do that? I just can’t present myself that way”. She said, “that’s OK Bobby, I will do it for both of us”. I can see her now sitting at the feet of Jesus, paving the way for her ‘slow to make friends’ husband when it comes time to join her. And I look forward to the day. – Bob Burkey.

Carole Ann Burkey, 88, of Millersburg went to carry on a

conversation with Jesus on July 14, 2025. Carole was born on July 11, 1937, in Columbus, OH to Luther W. and Elizabeth M. (Hummel) High and married Robert G. Burkey in 1959.

Raised in Millersburg, her parents taught her at an early age to serve and care for the medical needs of other people. A 1955 graduate of Millersburg High School, she went

on to receive a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Ohio State University. Carole loved nursing and for the next 40 years her career included helping set up the first emergency

room service in the county, serving many years as school nurse and ending her career as the Holmes County Deputy Health Commissioner.

Carole was a devoted wife and mother who loved spending time with her family. Surviving in addition to her husband are children Brett (Patti) Burkey, Beth (Randy) Wengerd, Becky (Todd) Denison, grandchildren Julia and Gretchen Burkey, Graham Wengerd, Jenna Salazar, Emmy Denison, Cameron Denison, and great grandchildren Isabella Elliott and Jolie Salazar. Also surviving is brother Gary High and wife Jo, and best friend Jan Fuchs.

She was a lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church where she played the organ and sang in the Choir and the Grace Notes ensemble.

The family wishes to thank the incredible staff at Danbury Millersburg and Lifecare Hospice for taking care of Carole in her difficult last years.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
