Arthur L. Miller

Arthur L. Miller passed peacefully to be with his Savior on July 31, 2018, at Majora Lane Nursing Home in Millersburg, Ohio, at the age of 94.  He was born in Millersburg on October 27, 1923, and married Juanita Schofield on August 14, 1949.  They had a happy marriage and he loved her dearly. She preceded him in death in 2011. 

Art is survived by his four sons, Mic (Leah) Miller,  Marc (Deborah) Miller,

Max (Joan) Miller, and A. Lee (Debra) Miller, all of Millersburg.

A source of great joy to Art were his eight grandchildren:  Ethan, Seth, McKenna, Rachel, Tessa, Alex, Jordan, and Kyle Miller, and Marc Allen Simcak. Eight great-grandchildren are his third generation survivors:  Evan, Samantha, Eamon, Brayden, Jordan, Audrey, Allyson, Reid, Ava and Paige.

Art was predeceased by his parents, D. Frank and Susannah (Shantz) Miller; and his siblings, Shirley Owen, Leda Crissey, Helen Burkey, Mary McClelland, and Orin Miller.

Surviving sisters to Art include Blanche (Sheldon) Schmucker of Millersburg, OH, and Janet (Pete) Litwiller of Illinois.

Art was an active member of the Millersburg United Methodist church for 65 years, serving as Sunday school teacher, usher and in many other capacities.  He immensely loved and enjoyed people, especially babies and children for whom he eagerly reached out to comfort and hold.  He was an active member of the Millersburg Rotary Club for many years.  Art loved his country as well. He served from 1943-1945 with the US Army in the Pacific with the 863 Engineer Battalion. An annual outing which he looked forward to the past 4 decades was “The Army Buddies Reunion” where he and his veteran soldiers and their families including buddy, Garth (June) Wilbur reminisced. In 2015, Art was the last known survivor of the 863rd, yet their families still returned for visits.

Art went to embalming school on the GI Bill after World War II and was licensed as a funeral director for several years.  In 1953, Art, and his brother-in-law, Sheldon Schmucker, founded Millersburg Tire Service, Inc. with one tire in stock; today, it is still a thriving business owned and operated by his nephew, Brad Schmucker, with whom he had a close relationship. Life with wife Juanita centered on church and family including across country road trips to various state and national parks with their sons, and summers spent at Lakeside, OH at their cottage.

Art will forever be remembered for his welcoming smile, warm heart, endless generosity, and optimistic spirit.  During the past decade, he was always most grateful for “Saturday Morning Donuts” with his four sons, including when the location changed to Greenridge Assisted Living.   Art and his family are so very thankful for the kind, professional, family-orientated, unsurpassed quality of care shown daily from the devoted Greenridge staff.  The family is also grateful for the kind and compassionate care Art received from the staff at Majora Lane Nursing Home and Lifecare Hospice.  Art indeed enjoyed a life well-lived.

Friends may call this Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Millersburg, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
