Agnes Reed Obituary

Agnes (Aggie) Reed of Millersburg passed away Sunday, September 11, at Walnut Hills Nursing Home following a long period of declining health.

Aggie was born in March 1927 in McKeesport, PA, to John and Agnes Donaldson and moved to Barberton, OH, as a small child. After the death of her mother, she found a loving home in Millersburg with her adoptive parents Lloyd and Alpha (Carnahan) Beegle. She married Ralph (Bud) Reed in January 1949.

Aggie graduated from Millersburg High School in 1945. She worked as a medical assistant to Dr. Nevin Stauffer, as an administrative assistant at Joel Pomerene Hospital, and as a caseworker for the State of Ohio Aid for the Aged and later for the Holmes County Dept of Welfare. After her retirement she returned to Pomerene Hospital and worked as a lab courier for several years.

She was active in her church—Millersburg Christian Church—and in her community, serving on the Advisory Board of Head Start of Holmes County, the Executive Democratic Committee of Holmes County, and in the local chapter of the American Red Cross. She also volunteered hundreds of hours at Pomerene Hospital. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and many other groups and clubs throughout the years.

She learned at a young age from her adoptive mother the joy of cooking and baking and the importance of sharing what you have. She had long been concerned with food insecurity and worked toward helping feed local families and children in need. Throughout her life she baked as a way of expressing her love to others. She collected old cookbooks and often joked that she always had a new recipe in her pocket waiting to be tried.

She loved to craft and enjoyed music, bowling and the outdoors, especially gardening, walking, and hunting mushrooms.

She was preceded in death by her birth and adoptive parents, her husband, Ralph, and her brother Robert Donaldson of Colorado. She is survived by her daughter Linda (Paul) Davis of Wooster, granddaughters Carrie Davis Todd, (Corey Todd) of Berea, OH, Adrienne Davis of Mayfield Hts., OH, Emily Davis of Milwaukee, WI, and a great-granddaughter Lucy Todd.

Aggie’s family wishes to thank the staff at Walnut Hills Nursing Home for their love and compassion during her time in their care.
