Larry Lee Neal, 87, passed peacefully at LifeCare Hospice of Wooster, on Sunday, November 12, 2017.
The son of the late Lorna and Clinton Neal, he was born on April 20, 1930 in Killbuck, Ohio. Larry was a 1948 graduate of Killbuck High School and received his BS in Chemistry from The Ohio State University. While in college, he was a member of Army ROTC and after graduation he served as First Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. Larry worked at Sorg Paper Company in Middletown, Ohio, as a chemist, retiring in 1992.
On May 25, 1957, he married Helen Elaine Switzer at First Christian Church in Middletown, Ohio. They recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Larry was a man of strong faith and Christian love and was a member of the First Church of Christ of Killbuck, Ohio, First Christian Church of Middletown, Ohio and the Millersburg First Presbyterian Church. He served as a Christian Educator, Elder, Council member, Choir and Bell choir member. Larry served his community through decades of (working at the polls) and was instrumental in developing the Walnut Grove community swim pool and recreation club in Trenton, Ohio. He most recently volunteered at and served on the Board of the German Culture Museum in Walnut Creek, Ohio.
Larry is survived by Helen, his wife of 60 years, his daughters; Laura (Mark) Schmidt of Orrville, Ohio and Julie (Tim) Cupka of Lebanon, Indiana; 12 grandchildren, Clinton Hammond, Amelia Hammond, Jared Schmidt, Susan Cupka Head, Dorothy Cupka, Lorna Steele, Leeanna Steele, Julie Rose Cupka, Addison Cupka, Alexis Himsieh, Chrissy Hudson and Jessica Marshall, and 5 great grandchildren, two sisters, Elaine (Ronald) Landon and Marlene (John) Purtan, and 6 nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jeannie Schodorf, brother-in-law Gary Schodorf and stepson, Stephen Marshall.
Larry was a lifetime stamp collector, member of American Philatelic Society since 1968, postal history lecturer and Stamp Club member. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, swimming, hiking, bird watching, genealogy, and attending The Ohio State University football games.
Family and friends will gather (Tuesday, November 14, 2017), for visitation from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. at the Millersburg First Presbyterian Church. The funeral will also be held at the church at 11:00 a.m., November 15, 2017 with Pastor Kristy Buyok officiating. Larry will be laid to rest in Killbuck Cemetery, following the funeral.
