Sue Smith Obituary

Sue E. “Mimi” Smith, 88, of Millersburg, Ohio died Thursday, July 16 at Brookdale Wooster following a brief period of decline.

She was preceded in death by her husband R. Gene Smith, and a son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Tammy) Smith. She is survived by her sister, Linda (Jamie) Shinske. She also leaves behind three children, Ann “Sis” (Mike) Brown, Brent Smith, and Susan (Chris) Hager, who adored her and had a hard time keeping up with her. Her grandchildren Rob (Anicia) Smith, Rachelle (Nathan) Smith Campbell, Ryan (Kim) Brown, Stacie (Kevin) Dutton, Stephanie (Eric) Pendlebury, Kaila (Kevin) Dunn, Kennedy Smith, Blaine Hager and Macin Hager will remember her as the one person who would have done anything for them. Her great-grandchildren Carter, Hunter, and Hayden Smith, Breslyn and Nolan Brown, Drake Dutton, Calvin, Casey, and Emery Pendlebury, all feel lucky to have been so loved by their Mimi.

Her family was her legacy. Without question, no fewer than 30 people would gather at her house for Christmas breakfast, holiday celebrations, and weekend pool parties. She has inspired her family to always live, love and give like Mimi. She made hard work look easy, making great contributions while running the Hotel Millersburg for a period of time and then working alongside her family at Bands Company. She will be remembered for her lively spirit, generosity and limitless energy. She loved animals and over the years rescued many. She enjoyed playing bridge, most recently playing with Briar Hill Bridge Club and Happy Bridge Club. She was a master knitter, well-known for her beautiful Christmas stockings.

Her family would like to issue a special thank you to our community for taking such good care of her in her later years which allowed her to maintain her independence for as long as possible. We are so grateful for the excellent care she received at Brookdale Wooster and from Hospice in her final days.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, private graveside services will be held for immediate family with Wes McElravy officiating. A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Holmes County Humane Society (PO Box 442, Millersburg, OH 44654) or the Holmes County Fair (PO Box 376, Millersburg, OH 44654).
